The pictures above are from last year’s race.  This will be my 3rd ING NYC Marathon.  The events of the past week with Hurricane Sandy have given this year’s race a new tone and a new direction.  The freedom’s we enjoy – transportation, power, beach front views have been ripped from us.  Even going to and from work and school and church have been put in jeopardy.  But resilence is about finding a way.  Running is a symbol of the solutions that must be found ahead.

Preparing for the race this week I checked in with my high school running coach at Jeffersonville High School Robert Calbert.  He recently retired but he stills works out daily at the local YMCA!

AMY FREEZE:  Hi Coach, what do you think is the biggest benefit of running?

Coach Calbert:  The major benefits of running are the physical an healthy activity for the body.  The development of memory and attention from running leads to long term mental health.

AMY FREEZE:  How does running help your mind?

Coach Calbert: Running can build confidence and self esteem.  It can provide a feeling of knowing that you can accomplish and clear obstacles.  It may allow for the opportunity to think about life’s problems or joys to escape for a while.

AMY FREEZE:  In what ways can young people benefit from distance training and group running?

COACH CALBERT:  It can be a health factor and an outstanding social investment for individuals,  It can pull people together for the accomplishment of the team.

AMY FREEZE: What’ s the secret to running fast and training people to run fast?

COACH CALBERT: By developing the skills one already possess a healthy diet and the will to compete – along with participating against good competition =- can have an amazing result.

AMY FREEZE: How long did you coach track and cross country?

COACH CALBERT:  I coached cross country for 25 years and track for 30 years. The rewards that I received were outstanding, 5 IHSA State Championship Relay Teams (2 with National records (4 State records broken. The people are most memorable but here are the awards earned.

-13 Sectional tittles

-8 Regional titles

-9 Cross Country Sectional Titles

-Inducted in IHSA of Track and Cross Country Feb. 1 2002  – just for having great people to work with!

AMY FREEZE:  Thanks Coach — I appreciate you for teaching me more than just about running but a lot about life and how to shoot for the finish line in everything you do!  All the best in your retirement!
